Jollibee Group and YouthWorks PH Launch On-the-Job Training Program for Cebu Youth

Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending the kickoff ceremony for the Jollibee Group Foundation’s (JGF) and YouthWorks PH’s Supervised Industry Learning (SIL) program. Held at Jollibee Parkmall in Mandaue City, this event marked the start of an exciting journey for the first batch of 21 youth trainees. These trainees, who are part of the “Not in Education, Employment, or Training” (NEET) demographic, will begin their on-the-job training (OJT) at Jollibee, Chowking, and Greenwich stores across Cebu.

A Transformative Learning Experience

The trainees have already completed 10 weeks of classroom training, which covered essential skills for Quick Service Restaurant Operations (QSRO). Now, they are moving into the next phase: hands-on, real-world experience. Over the next three months, these young participants will work closely with store managers and crew members, learning critical skills like customer service, food handling, and sanitation.

Speaking at the event, Ruth Angeles, Jollibee Group’s Chief Human Resources Officer, emphasized how this OJT will equip the trainees with practical skills that are essential for their careers in the food service industry:

“This part is crucial because it puts them in real-world situations and gives them the practical skills they need to handle the challenges of their job.”

Investing in the Future of Filipino Youth

The SIL program is part of JGF’s Access Curriculum and Employability (ACE) Scholarship Program, which provides opportunities for underprivileged youth to improve their livelihoods. Through partnerships with organizations like PSEFI-SKILLS, PBEd, and USAID, the ACE program not only offers QSRO training but also has a second track focused on agriculture.

Gisela Tiongson, President of JGF, highlighted the organization’s commitment to youth education and empowerment:

“This initiative reflects our commitment to drive social change and open up more opportunities to help the next generation succeed and reach their dreams.”

The First Batch of Trainees

During the event, one of the trainees, Jessa Marie Jumao-as, shared how the program has been a life-changing experience for her. Having previously worked as part of a cleaning service, she now feels more confident and prepared for her future in the food service industry:

“This has been a transformative experience. I’m grateful to Jollibee Group and PSEFI-SKILLS for teaching me new skills and giving me this opportunity.”

A Collaborative Effort

The SIL program is a shining example of how collaboration between the private sector, government, and educational institutions can create meaningful opportunities for Filipino youth. As Justine Raagas, Executive Director of PBEd, put it:

“When government, businesses, educators, and communities join forces, we can empower young people, unlock their potential, and build a brighter future for all.”

What’s Next for the Program?

The success of the first batch of trainees in Cebu is just the beginning. The Jollibee Group plans to continue expanding its ACE Scholarship and YouthWorks PH programs, bringing them to other parts of the Philippines to help more underprivileged youth gain valuable work experience and improve their employability.
